What Are The Essential Steps To Launch A Small Business Website?

Most people think the steps are: design it, build it, launch it. That's part of it, but the businesses that actually get results out of a new website do a few things most people skip.

  • Know what the site actually needs to do. Not "we need a website," but a real answer to what it should achieve and how it's different from the three competitors your customers are already looking at. If you can't answer that, neither can we, and the site ends up generic. This is what a good brief is for.
  • Sort your domain and business name before anything gets built. We still see people start a project without the domain locked in, only to find out later it's taken, or worse, tied up with someone else's trademark. Get this done in week one, not week ten.
  • Don't wait on content to start design. Most clients don't have their copy and images ready when we start, and that's fine. It's genuinely easier to write good copy once you can see where it's going to live. Chasing a client for content before there's anything to react to just stalls the project.
  • Pick your platform based on what you actually need, not what's trendy. If you need real customisation, WordPress. If you want something that runs itself with minimal fuss, Shopify. Most small business owners don't have a strong opinion here, and that's the right instinct, let whoever's building it make the call based on your needs.
  • Have a marketing plan before launch, not after. This is the one that actually determines whether the project feels successful six months later. A good site with no traffic looks exactly like a bad site: nobody's using it. We've seen clients launch, check their analytics a few months in, and see visitors who land on the site convert well, there just aren't enough of them. At that point it's obvious the site was never the problem. Most business owners have some sense of their audience, but few have a real SEO plan, and almost none are thinking about GEO, how their business shows up in AI-generated answers, which is becoming just as relevant.

None of this needs to happen in a strict order, and a good agency will help you work through most of it. But the businesses that skip the marketing question entirely are the ones who come back a few months later confused about why a website they're happy with isn't doing anything for them.
